Cathy's Story is Front Page News

The Record, our local newspaper, has published Cathy's story as Front Page News. The story is continued on Page Two. Friends of ours sent a personal message to a contact at the paper informing them of our situation. We received word last week that they "might" be interested in doing a short article and would let us know.

Record reporter Carol Goodwin and photographer Mathew McCarthy visited Cathy in the hospital on Monday to get the details. It wasn't until the interview was finished that we found out that the story was slated to run on the front page. With a circulation of 70,000 and a coverage area that includes Waterloo Region, east to guelph, north past Hanover, and west to Lake Huron, we were overjoyed to know that so many people would be made aware of our situation and the need for Bone Marrow Donors in general.

Dear Cathy,Chris,Courtney and Caitlin:
I received this article via e-mail from my daughter Krista Housepian today. Krista is a friend of both of your daughters. I just wanted to let you know that I work with a lot of Italian people and I have forwarded the article to them and asked them to forward the article to all their relatives in the hopes of finding a donor. We are all praying for you.

Hi there, I'm am the daughter of Cathy's neighbour who was at Grand River Hospital between September22-October7. I read the front page article in the Record about Cathy's need for a transplant and I just wanted you to know that I was touched by your story. My husband and I will be getting tested for the bone marrow donation registry. We hope with all our hearts that Cathy is matched and recieves her transplant soon.

I hope that you are all having a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend together. I have some friends in Boston that would like to be tested for Cathy but would like the results to be sent to Cathy's doctor directly. I have spoken to the people at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston who say that they can send the results if we have the proper contact information for Cathy's doctor in Canada. Please let me know if this is possible, we are all anxious to be tested. Also, let us know if there is anything at all we can do for you guys.
Love,
Erin Hunt and family.

Dear Cathy and Chris, Courtney and Caitlin: Your heartbreaking story was passed along to us by John and Wendy Rush, and then we read the article in the Record the other day. I don't know if you remember us, but we were your neighbours to the left (looking at the houses) many years ago when the homes were first built on your street. Wendy and I have been lifelong friends, and she has been telling me of the hard times that have befallen your family. My heart goes out to you, and I think of you so very often each day. I phoned the Blood Services organization, hoping that I could be tested for potential marrow donation, but I was disqualified for a pre-existing medical condition. It is not something of great seriousness, but it is something that would be a risk if you or anyone else were to receive my bone marrow. So I wasn't able to go any further with it, to my great regret. Please know, however, that you are in thought and constant prayer that a matching donor will be found very soon. May God give you strength and courage as you wait each day for hopeful news. I wish all of you the very best. God bless.

We are so pleased that so many will be reached by the Front Page Article. We continue to spread Cathy's story with sensitivity and hope. We hope that Cathy can spend time at home during Thanksgiving. It will be good to have Courtney and Caitlin home too.
Lots of Love,
The Rush Family

Today I received my rejection letter from blood services "there is now scientific evidence that younger donors offer an improved outcome to transplant recipients." However I was successful in leaving blood at our centre in Waterloo this week and rescheduled for November.Cathy and Chris your front page is now at my workplace and we also dropped it off again to the Marcone Club in London. God bless you both. Hope you make it home for Thanksgiving.
